This ten-week series is for expectant couples desiring a natural, unmedicated birth, whether they choose to birth in a hospital, birthing center, or in the comfort of their home. The classes are taught by me, Kat Chronis, a registered nurse and certified natural childbirth educator who is passionate about helping people make informed decisions pertaining to their bodies and health.
The curriculum is called “Boot Camp” because it involves hard work, training, and preparation in a relatively short period of time. It is geared towards both the mother AND father, giving them both the tools they need to have an amazing birth and breastfeeding journey. Statistically, in the US, one-third of all births will result in cesarean. Couples that have taken the Birth Boot Camp series have a much lower cesarean rate (15%) and of the 85% having vaginal births, 78% are unmedicated. These statistics speak for themselves. Education is very important for optimal birth outcomes.
We will meet for two to two-and-a-half hours each week for some hands-on learning in a laid back environment. You will meet other like-minded expectant parents and develop a support network throughout pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. We will also have a follow-up meeting at a time/place to-be-determined in class to meet everyone’s new recruits!
Each week, a different topic will be discussed, all the while maintaining a strong emphasis on the importance of nutrition, exercise, and relaxation. We will talk about why natural birth is important, pain management, choosing where to birth and who to have for your birth team, interventions, inductions, labor stages, how Dad can best help, what happens during birth, labor positions, variations of labor, birth plans, and so much more. The last class will focus on life with your new recruit – we will talk about the postpartum period, with a special emphasis on breastfeeding. While ten weeks may seem like a long commitment, there is a lot of information to cover, and this is a comprehensive class, covering pregnancy, labor, and postpartum.
Please dress comfortably as each class will involve floor time, with exercises, relaxation, and other activities. I recommend bringing a yoga mat for each of you, two pillows, water, and of course, snacks. Some women may find it beneficial to bring a birth ball. This is a great tool to have during labor as well!
